Water: The use of leather in footwear can provide millions of jobs in Ethiopia alone, but it also requires the use of a lot of water for the tanning of leather. We require that all of our leather tanneries are either ISO 14001 certified or at minimum, have water treatment plants that are constantly inspected.
Natural: We are proud that the cow, sheep and goats from which our leather is sourced have lived a life that is free range, hormone free and on average 5-6 years longer than livestock from most developed countries. For the outsoles of our footwear, we use natural crepe rubber tapped straight from rubber trees, which allows us to avoid using toxic equipment and chemicals commonly used in making machine-made outsoles.
Recycle: We offer 3-Way Shipping which means that once you have enjoyed your Olibertés, if you can’t donate or reuse them, we will take back the shoes and recycle them.
Improvement: Due to some of the challenges of working in Africa, we must fly our footwear out of each country we manufacture in and this is currently our biggest eco-challenge. We are working very hard to improve our processes so we can efficiently and responsibly transport with a greener solution by end of 2011.
